|2009: Long Beach Scuba Show
Inter-Ocean Tours had a booth at Scuba Show May 30-31,09. The show had a good turnout and we enjoyed talking to divers new and familiar. Marilyn and Kyoko visited with many resorts and liveaboards at the show. We learned of some great specials and have summarized them at our Specials page.

|Dee Scarr and Coral Conservation
by Marilyn Johnson Hearney
If you have traveled with us, you received "Dee Scarr's Suggestions to Divers for Reef Preservation and Contented Undersea Creatures" with our gear list and your travel documents. Dee gave it to me at the 1988 DEMA Show. I was very impressed with the upbeat way she clearly explained 10 tips to help protect our marine environment. I know these ideas are not covered well in most dive classes and observed divers unknowingly damaging coral and not understanding how to interact with the life there. I added that we should not buy shells and corals since this encourages the locals to harvest the corals and such. We have been distributing the 10 tips to divers ever since.
I first met Dee in Bonaire when she was a dive guide at Flamingo Beach Resort in the 70's. She taught me and the divers I was escorting about treating the reef creatures more gently. Many facts & tips were new to us. Her first book was published in 1984, "Touch the Sea", giving details of her encounters with sea creatures and continues helping us learn more about their reef home. Her next book was "Coral's Reef" It is a story written to help children learn about the gentle world beneath the sea. The "Gentle Sea" was written - with humor and plenty of personal experiences and continues the lessons in "Touch the Sea" enhanced with new things she learned.
She continues to be a champion for our coral reefs, currently with the ABC Project = Action in Behalf of Coral. She is distributing a sticker that explains the fragile creatures and how easily they are destroyed. She is hoping divers will take the sticker with them on their trips to coral reefs to post on the dive boats and dive shops there. This is a simple way for you to help protect the coral reefs. You can read more about ABC project and download a sticker in pdf file on her webpage at www.touchthesea.com.
